Australia 103m, Colour
Director: Stephan Elliott; Cast: Terence Stamp, Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce, Bill Hunter
Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is an often broken-down bus which carries this film’s principal characters, three drag queens across the Australian outback from Sydney to Alice Springs to perform a lip-synced cabaret show. The film’s outrageously flamboyant costuming and use of vibrant colour, set against the reddish natural earthen environment of the outback, provides a visually stunning contrast which is as memorable as it is mesmerizing. Notwithstanding the largely comedic and visual appeal of this movie, the film has a surprisingly dramatic subplot which is the basis for much of this movie’s worth. Excellent performances by Stamp, Weaving and Pearce, both as drag queens and as dramatic characters, also greatly contribute to the overall likability and appeal of this extraordinary film (Klaus Ming February 2010).
Not for the slight bit of homophobia, but is a funny but true look on being accepted in life gay or straight.
