I was recently asked by Joem at “Does Writing Excuse Watching?” how I pick the movies that I watch, and the order in which I watch them? Notwithstanding Schneider’s fifth edition of “1001 Movies you must see before you die” which is the basis for this blog, my choice of movies not on the list are often long-time favourites or titles that friends and fellow bloggers have recommended. As for their order, I initially attempted to watch all/most of the silent era movies first, in an effort to establish some historical understanding of film. Since then, I’ve been watching the list in the order of member selections from the 1001 Movie Review Club, at filmsquish.com. As for the rest, I’m largely influenced by other film blogs and what I feel like watching at bed time, which usually does not involve anything which may lead to nightmares or require that I read subtitles. Although I have not examined the order of the titles which I’ve watched, I’m aware that I tend to get hooked on genres and/or directors from time to time, but then usually look for something completely different once I’ve had enough. Recent purchases have also played a part in my viewing habits, despite the fact that there are titles in my collection which have sat unwatched for a number of years (Klaus Ming July 2011).
Thanks, Klaus. Your reviews are always top-notch!
Thanks for the compliment and for the interesting question. You got me thinking about why I choose what I choose. And now i’m consciously making connections that i was previously unaware of. My next review will be Marie Antoinette (2006) – watched last night, which I realize is connected with my comment on Interview with a Vampire (1994) over at Dave Becker’s 2,500 Movie Challenge – on Kirsten Dunst’s character.
Marie Antoinette and Irina Palm via Marianne Faithfull; followed by Ben “Gandhi / Sexy Beast” Kingsley…although not sure if there is a connection between Irina and Gandhi?
