Juxtaposing the magnificence of nature and the brutality of war, The Thin Red Line is a meandering but beautifully photographed film featuring a large ensemble cast. Set in the South Pacific during World War II, it follows a group of American soldiers who are ordered to capture a strongly fortified hill manned by tired and starving Japanese soldiers. Heavily narrated and with minimal dialogue, Malick explores the human psyche as it changed by the shock of war, while simultaneously depicting the collateral damage against the environment. Malick’s unique contemporary treatment of a WWII is distressing, mesmerizing and unforgettable (Klaus Ming January 2012).
