Deep End (1970)

UK/West Germany 90m, Colour
Director: Jerzy Skolimowski; Cast: Jane Asher, John Moulder Brown, Diana Dors

Deep End is a bizarre and disturbing coming of age film for a 15-year-old boy who leaves school to become a bathhouse attendant where he is regularly pursued by his clients to provide more than shampoo and towels. Despite the embarrassment and challenges of the job, he persists, largely due to his fascination with Susan, his female fellow worker who is ten years his senior. In pursuing her, he realizes that her involvement in the seedy side of London was far greater than he could have imagined. Wanting to be part of this world, his fascination turns to an unhealthy obsession with strange and tragic consequences (Klaus Ming March 2012).
