A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop (2009)

China 90m, Colour
Director: Zhang Yimou; Cast: Sun Honglei, Ni Dahong, Xiaoshenyang, Yan Ni

A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop is an adaptation of the Cohen brother’s film, Blood Simple (1984). In addition to the dark humor found in the original, Noodle Shop also has a lot of slapstick comedic elements which work well with the often cartoon-like characters who become involved in the complicated murder plot. Set in a small 19thC desert town in north-west China, the film’s use of color in both set design and costume is a huge departure from the film noir style of Blood Simple. While essentially the same story, Zhang Yimou’s adaptation is a surreal and unique viewing experience (Klaus Ming May 2012).
