Arguably, Marvel’s definitive superhero film, The Avengers is the entertaining culmination of a series of comic book films which combines Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the Hulk under the banner of S.H.I.E.L.D. – a clandestine peacekeeping organization. Despite the predictably over-the-top and somewhat lengthy action sequences, the film’s best moments are in character development – which is given time to build, and in the witty and comedic dialogue, particularly from Downey’s Iron Man and Ruffalo’s Hulk. While Thor is a solid contributor, Captain America’s prowess as a member of the team and as a character of interest seems limited and overshadowed by the other Avengers (Klaus Ming May 2012).
