The Red Violin (1998)

Canada 131m, Colour
Director: François Girard; Cast: Samuel L. Jackson, Colm Feore, Monique Mercure, Don McKellar, Sylvia Chang, Jason Flemyng, Greta Scacchi, Carlo Cecchi

The Red Violin is an intelligent and beautifully sad drama that follows a fabled Italian instrument from the time of its manufacture by a distraught father who fashioned it for a child who died with its mother at birth in 1681. The non-linear plot follows the trajectory of this near-perfect instrument through a series of flashbacks as its identity and history are incrementally revealed by experts who prepare it for auction in 1997. Combining both mystery and drama, The Red Violin is also a celebration of music and the desires and passions which are fundamental to humanity (Klaus Ming June 2012).
