The Unknown (1927)

USA 63m, silent (B&W)
Director: Tod Browning: Cast: Lon Chaney, Joan Crawford, Norman Kerry

the-unknown-1927The Unknown is a bizarre dramatic horror love story starring Lon Chaney as a circus performer who has his arms amputated to secure the love of his beautiful assistant Nanon, the young and beautiful Joan Crawford, who he has brainwashed to fear the embrace of any man. His plan backfires when he is away recuperating from his operation and she falls for his rival, “Malabar the Mighty” – the strong-armed circus strongman . The psychological nature of the plot is years ahead of its time, and Chaney provides a most convincing performance as the insanely jealous “Alonzo the Armless” (Klaus Ming January 2009).
