Captain Blood (1935)

USA 119m sound (B&W)
Director: Michael Curtiz; Cast: Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Basil Rathbone, Ross Alexander

Captain BloodErrol Flynn plays the dashing Captain Peter Blood, an ex-medical doctor who was arrested and wrongfully convicted for treason because he treated a friend who was a rebel soldier. After being shipped to Jamaica and sold as a slave to a cruel local commander and his beautiful and sympathetic niece “Arabella”, played by Olivia de Havilland, he organizes an escape with a motley but devoted crew of landlubbers to start new lives as the original Pirates of the Caribbean. Captain Blood is a highly entertaining and action packed adventure, and Flynn is terrific as Captain Blood who set a high standard for all swashbucklers to come, which was only recently surpassed by Johnny Depp’s performances as Captain Jack Sparrow (Klaus Ming January 2009).
