The Player is a hilarious satire of the movie industry which contains a dizzying number of cameo roles and insider-jokes which pay homage to Hollywood’s finest moments while poking fun at many of its less than inspired efforts. Robbins plays Griffin Mill, a movie producer who becomes involved in a murder of a writer who he mistakenly believes is out to get him. As the murder case plays out we eventually learn that “The Player” is Griffin’s own life-story of murder and intrigue – sold to his studio and produced by Griffin as part of a blackmail deal which he’s forced into by an unseen disgruntled writer who had been sending him postcard death threats (Klaus Ming April 2009).
