The Philadelphia Story (1940)

USA 112m, B&W
Director: George Cukor; Cast: Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart, Ruth Hussey, Virginia Weidler

philadelphiastoryThe Philadelphia Story is an amusing romantic comedy starring Katherine Hepburn who convincingly plays a rich socialite with marriage plans that get complicated as her ex-husband, played by Cary Grant and two reporters from “Spy” magazine include themselves in her wedding plans as a means to get an inside story. While the plot is often a far-fetched at times, the screenplay and witty banter between Hepburn and her suitors is a lot of fun to watch.  Of note is the oddball character of the younger sister, capably played by child-star Virginia Wheeler, who is definitely the center of attention every time she is on-screen (Klaus Ming June 2009).
