Raging Bull (1980)

USA 129m, B&W and Colour
Director: Martin Scorsese: Cast: Robert De Niro, Cathy Moriarty, Joe Pesci, Frank Vincent

Raging BullRaging Bull is arguably the finest biographical film ever made and should be considered one of the greatest  movies of all time. It follows the intriguing career and the self-destructive personal life of middleweight boxing champion Jake LaMotta in a sympathetic yet brutally honest manner as both hero and villain. The film’s strengths are numerous, most notably Robert De Niro’s brilliant portrayal of LaMotta, and Martin Scorsese’s original direction. Most memorable are the fight scenes which are meticulously lighted, filmed and edited to present LaMotta’s triumphs and losses in a hyper-realistic manner which set this film apart from all other boxing movies, and highlights the brutality and beauty of the sport (Klaus Ming June 2009).
