The Wrestler (2008)

USA 109m, Colour
Director: Darren Aronofsky; Cast: Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood, Ernest Miller

the-wrestlerThe Wrestler is a gritty story about selfishness, personal tragedy, and loneliness which features an outstanding  performance by Mickey Rourke as Randy “The Ram” Robinson – an aging wrestler who has dreams to climb his way back to the top of the wrestling world until he suffers a heart attack that forces him to retire and think about a future without wrestling. Despite his efforts to re-connect with his estranged daughter, and to begin a romantic relationship with a stripper he has befriended, the Ram’s post-wrestling life is a disaster which ultimately costs him his life. The Wrestler is an engaging and realistic film that is full of scenes that are sometimes difficult to watch, but are truly engaging (Klaus Ming June 2009).
