Adam’s Rib (1949)

USA 101m, B&W
Director: George Cukor; Cast: Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, Judy Holliday, Tom Ewell

Adam'sRibAdam’s Rib is a romantic comedy with a serious side which sees a husband, Spencer Tracy and wife, Katharine Hepburn, take opposite sides in a court case surrounding infidelity and domestic violence. Acting as lawyers for both the defense, and the prosecution, the tensions of the courtroom eventually follow them home and into their day-to-day lives. Despite the unlikely plot, the film serves as a vehicle for some good dialogue and an interesting discussion of a woman’s rights, or lack thereof, in late 1940s America (Klaus Ming September 2009).
