Aparajito (1956)

India 110m, B&W
Director: Satyajit Ray; Cast: Kanu Banerjee, Karuna Banerjee, Pinaki Sengupta, Smaran Ghosal

aparajitoAparjito is a sad but heartwarming coming-of-age story about Apu, the only son of a poor Bengali family who leave their family home for work in the city after the death of their eldest child. After further misfortune, Apu, who was taught by his father to read and write, is offered a scholarship to study in Calcutta. While Apu’s time in Calcutta is unremarkable, his story is engaging and realistic. As this second chapter of the story closes, he again is tested by further loss and we are left to wonder how he will deal with his circumstances (Klaus Ming October 2009).
