Independence Day (1996)

USA 145m, Colour
Director: Roland Emmerich; Cast: Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Mary McDonnell, Judd Hirsch, Robert Loggia, Randy Quaid

Independence-dayNotwithstanding the underlying message of world cooperation, the overtly patriotic Independence Day skillfully combines the epic disaster film with science fiction by way of an alien invasion which threatens the very existence of mankind. Many of the special effects depicting the destruction of New York and Washington DC are frighteningly realistic and are one the main strengths of this film. The other remarkable aspect of this movie is its lighthearted and often comical tone, despite the suggestion that millions of people are killed during the initial phase of the invasion – the balance between humor, drama and action is a delicate one which Emmerich manages to maintain (Klaus Ming October 2009).
