The Mission (1986)

UK 126m, Colour
Director: Roland Joffé; Cast: Robert De Niro, Jeremy Irons, Ray McAnally, Liam Neeson , Aidan Quinn.

the missionThe Mission is a beautifully filmed and scored account of the mid-eighteenth century Guarani Indians and their ill-fated relations with colonial interests in which they were subject to capture and enslavement by the Portuguese, and sought as Christian converts by Spain through Jesuit missionary work in South America. While De Niro, Irons, Neeson and supporting cast provide superb performances, the real stars of the film are the hundreds of Waunana Indian extras who portray the Guarani. In addition to the engaging story, and Ennio Morricone’s masterful score, the Mission also serves as a social commentary on the continuing struggle of the aboriginal inhabitants in politically troubled regions (Klaus Ming November 2009).
