Horror of Dracula (1958)

Horror of Dracula (1958)
UK 82m, Colour
Director: Terence Fisher; Cast: Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, Carol Marsh

This remake of Tod Browning’s 1931 Dracula offers an updated and more adult-themed plot which sets it apart from the better-known and celebrated Hollywood version. Although Christopher Lee’s portrayal as the Dracula may not be as memorable as Lugosi’s, it is certainly more frightening – which culminates in a terrifically macabre death-by-sunlight finale. Detail to set design and the use of vibrant colors and excellent (for the time) special effects provide this film with a style and feel that became hallmarks for a host of highly entertaining “Hammer” horror films  (Klaus Ming December 2009).
