Unforgiven (1992)

USA 131m, Colour
Director: Clint Eastwood; Cast: Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, Richard Harris

unforgiven_1992Unforgiven is a terrifically entertaining western that examines a darker psychological side of the “Old West” through the characters of two aging killers who decide to take on one last assassin job on behalf of a group of prostitutes who seek revenge on two men that badly disfigure one of their own. With justifiable reason, and a hefty payday, Eastwood and Freeman’s characters join forces with a young, wannabe gunslinger, only to come up against a sheriff that wants none of this sort of “work” in his town. The showdown is bloody, and it is presented in a most matter-of-fact and inglorious manner, which not only adds a level of realism, but also provides a lesson in the development of myth and legend through the telling and re-telling of stories (Klaus Ming January 2010).

With a couple of misfires, Unforgiven still makes a wonderful Western film, that has more story, and better acting than your normal Western. This is certainly my favorite Western of all-time, and shows that Clint Eastwood surely can make masterpieces.

    Perhaps the last great Western.
