The Bad and the Beautiful (1952)

USA 118m, B&W
Director: Vincente Minnelli; Cast: Lana Turner, Kirk Douglas, Walter Pidgeon, Dick Powell, Barry Sullivan, Gloria Grahame

The Bad and the Beautiful is a fictional “insider” story about the movie industry which is told in three parts in a series of flashbacks in which the principal characters are reminded about their association with Jonathan Shields – the most unpopular figure in Hollywood who hopes to engage his old associates in a new project. Although none of the four stories is particularly engaging in their own right, together, they constitute a well-crafted and interesting story which benefits from strong performances and excellent cinematography (Klaus Ming March 2010).
