Lola Rennt (1998)

Germany 76m, Colour
Director: Tom Tykwer; Cast: Franka Potente, Moritz Bleibtreu, Herbert Knaup

Run Lola Run is a furiously paced action film which recounts a simple story of a girlfriend who attempts to save her boyfriend from a gang who is sure to kill him – as soon as they find out that he has lost their $100,000 DM on a subway car. The plot unfolds quickly with Lola’s attempt ending with tragic consequences, which is curiously followed be a second attempt which also fails, but under different circumstances, and finally a third attempt – at which point the film begins to feel like Bill Murray’s Groundhog Day but with guns, gangs and an energy and pace reminiscent of recent films like Crank (Klaus Ming April 2010).
