The Heart of the World (2000)

Canada 6m, silent (B&W)
Director: Guy Maddin; Cast: Leslie Bais, Caelum Vatnsdal, Shaun Balbar

The Heart of the World is a brilliantly conceived and executed homage to silent film which encapsulates much of that era’s most memorable imagery in a mere six minutes. Perfectly set to Georgy Sviridov’s frantically-paced score from Time Forward! (1967), this magnificent short is the surreal tale of Anna, a young and beautiful scientist who studies the earth’s core, only to realize that at its heart, it is dying. In choosing a rich industrialist over two unusual brothers – Osip an actor playing Christ in the Passion Play, and his brother Nikolai, an enthusiastic mortician – Anna is eventually moved to strangle capitalism and replace the dying heart of the world with her own (Klaus Ming November 2010).

My favourite short film – should be on the 1001 list.
