Three Kings (1999)

US 114m, Colour
Director: David O. Russell; Cast: George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube, Spike Jonze, Cliff Curtis, Nora Dunn, Jamie Kennedy

three-kingsThree Kings is a complex dramatic war film which contains elements of black comedy based on a plot which involves the attempted liberation of stolen gold bullion by conscientious and somewhat bewildered members of the American military during the 1991 Iraqi uprising following the first Gulf War. The film starts out as a planned heist of stolen Kuwati gold by renegade American soldiers. The plot, however, quickly evolves into a political statement against the US involvement in Iraq which left rebel forces, who were initially supported by the American government, to be killed by Saddam Hussein after the cessation of official hostilities which left him in control of the country. Darkly comedic, moving, and visually striking, Three Kings is an unusual war movie that is highly engaging and politically charged (Klaus Ming April 2011).

I really need to see this, considering how much I liked I Heart Huckabees.

It’s a better movie than I had remembered. I was really surprised how dramatic it became.
