Born: Mary Jane West
August 17, 1893, Brooklyn, New York, US
Originally honing her talents in vaudeville, Mae West is best known as an American sex symbol and a quick-witted comedic actress with a penchant for double entendres. In film, West may be best remembered as Flower Belle Lee in My Little Chickadee (1940), starring opposite the comic icon – W.C. Fields. Apart from her notoriety as a sex symbol, Mae West was also an accomplished writer, singer, stage performer and radio actor. Arguably, her defining film role was as “Diamond Lou” in the romantic comedy She Done Him Wrong (1933) which was adapted from her 1928 Broadway play “Diamond Lil” and her only film on the 1001 list (Klaus Ming May 2011).
