Waking Ned Divine (1998)

UK/France 91m, Colour
Director: Kirk Jones; Cast: Ian Bannen, David Kelly, Fionnula Flanagan, Susan Lynch, James Nesbitt

Waking Ned Divine is a quirky dark comedy about the residents of a small town who are brought together in an attempt to claim a prize of almost seven million pounds, despite the fact that the real owner of the winning lottery ticket, Ned Divine had passed away as a result of learning that he had won the grand prize! Without any known relatives, his friends Jackie O’Shea and Michael O’Sullivan hatch a plot to collect the prize money on his behalf, not realizing that their simple plan would become a whole lot more complicated when they are forced to include everyone in the sleepy Irish village of Tulaigh Mhór. In addition to the wonderfully clever story, Waking Ned Divine is filled with colourful characters, first-rate performances and a memorable Celtic soundtrack (Klaus Ming June 2011).
