Super 8 (2011)

US 112m, Colour
Director: J. J. Abrams; Cast: Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler, Riley Griffiths, Ryan Lee, Gabriel Basso, Zach Mills

Set during the summer of 1979, Super 8 is a nostalgic and very entertaining combination of The Goonies (1985), ET (1982) and Cloverfield (2008). The basic premise of this science fiction action film surrounds a group of misfit teenagers who are attempting to make their own zombie movie, only to find themselves at the center of a military operation which is attempting to cover-up the truth about a train derailment which they not only witness, but accidentally catch on film. With an ensemble cast of likable and believable kids, Super 8 is also a coming of age story which explores adolescent friendships amidst some pretty frightening action sequences involving a menacing alien entity which, if given the opportunity, would eat ET for dinner (Klaus Ming June 2011).
