The Wolf Man (1941)

US 71m, B&W
Director: George Waggner; Cast: Lon Chaney, Jr., Claude Rains, Evelyn Ankers, Ralph Bellamy, Patric Knowles, Béla Lugosi, Maria Ouspenskaya

As one of the original Universal monsters, The Wolf Man is an influential horror film which largely established the character, look and the mythology of the werewolf in the movies. As with many other contemporary Hollywood horror films, the plot of The Wolf Man relies on the creation and exposition of a monster who wreaks havoc upon unsuspecting townsfolk, followed by a hunt and an ambiguous ending for the beast. Despite the Wolf Man’s formulaic approach and the lack of any literary source as inspiration for the character, The Wolf Man’s appeal in popular culture has spawned numerous sequels and television adaptations as well as the most recent 2010 Joe Johnston remake of the same name  (Klaus Ming June 2011).
