Les Diaboliques (1954)

France 114m, B&W
Director: Henri-Georges Clouzot; Cast: Simone Signoret, Véra Clouzot, Paul Meurisse, Charles Vanel

Les-DiaboliquesLes Diaboliques is a Hitchcock style suspense/thriller about a wife’s plans to conspire with her husband’s mistress to drown her abusive spouse and dispose of his lifeless corpse in their filthy swimming pool. After the “murder” is committed, the husband’s body unexpectedly disappears from the drained pool, which is followed by even stranger suggestions that he had somehow been seen alive after his death. This is a spellbinding and slow-building murder mystery with first-rate performances and a superb and surprising plot twist (Klaus Ming July 2011).
