The Substitute (2007)

Denmark, 93m, Colour
Director: Ole Bornedal; Cast: Paprika Steen, Ulrich Thomsen, Jonas Wandschneider, Sofie Gråbøl, Ulf Pilgaard, Holger Juul Hansen

The Substitute (aka Vikaren) is a suspenseful and often funny and anxiety-filled horror film about an alien who possesses the body of a poultry farmer named Ulla – who becomes a mean-spirited mind reading sixth grade substitute teacher. While Ulla is highly praised by parents for her efforts to prepare their children for an international competition in Paris, the kids are at a loss to convince their parents about Ulla’s true identity. As the villain, Steen’s portrayal of the psychopathic Ulla is both wonderfully funny and frightening in this very entertaining and well scripted film (Klaus Ming October 2011).
