Brazil/France 130m, Colour
Directors: Fernando Meirelles & Kátia Lund; Cast: Alexandre Rodrigues, Alice Braga, Leandro Firmino, Phellipe Haagensen, Douglas Silva, Jonathan Haagensen, Matheus Nachtergaele, Seu Jorge, Roberta Rodrigues, Graziella Moretto

City of God is an adaptation of the 1997 Paulo Lins novel of the same name which documents the development of three decades of organized crime through the eyes of a young boy and aspiring photographer named Rocket who is part of a trio of childhood friends who grow up in a ghetto community of Rio de Janeiro. Filmed almost as documentary, the film’s realism is aided by the fact that many of the actors are residents of the areas where the film was set. Beautifully shot, City of God is a savage coming of age story which takes the lives of many and spares but a few from violence and mayhem which permeates everyday life in the Cidade De Deus (Klaus Ming November 2011).
