Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965)

Japan 96m, Colour
Director: Ishirō Honda; Cast: Akira Takarada, Nick Adams, Kumi Mizuno, Jun Tazaki, Akira Kubo, Yoshio Tsuchiya, Haruo Nakajima

As the sequel to Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964) – Invasion of the Astro-Monster reveals that Planet X is Ghidorah’s home planet. The investigation of the planet, hidden behind Jupiter, is also the subject of investigation of a Japanese/American space mission which discovers a computer controlled alien race who bid for the services of Godzilla and Rodan. Godzilla’s transformation into anti-hero is pretty much complete in this film, as he does a “happy dance” when released from the alien’s magnetic wave mind control, and is again able to pursue his three headed foe with the aid of Rodan. Perhaps not one of Godzilla’s finest moments, but certainly one of his silliest (Klaus Ming February 2012).
