Marlene Dietrich (1901 – 1992)

Born: Marie Magdalene Dietrich
December 27, 1901

The German-born Marlene Dietrich’s illustrious career as a singer and actress began in Germany on stage and in silent film. However, it was her starring role as the cabaret performer Lola Lola in Josef von Sternberg’s “The Blue Angel” and her musical performance of “Falling in Love Again” which brought her to Hollywood. Characterized as a strong, glamorous and exotic woman, she was also known for her ability to reinvent herself in various roles. Four of her finest films including The Blue Angel (1930), Shanghai Express (1932), Destry Rides Again (1939) and Touch of Evil (1958) are included on the 1001 list (Klaus Ming February 2012).
