A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy (1982)

US 88m, Colour
Director: Woody Allen; Cast: Woody Allen, Mia Farrow, José Ferrer, Julie Hagerty, Tony Roberts, Mary Steenburgen, Adam Redfield

A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy is a light-hearted delightfully silly romantic farce involving an improbably odd ensemble cast including a philosopher and his beautiful and young fiancée, a half-baked inventor and his sexually repressed wife; and a womanizing doctor and an emancipated nurse. Over the course of a weekend, a series of half-baked intellectual discussions and ill-fated romantic trysts are satisfied amidst a beautifully set country location. The film is a blend of Allen’s earlier madcap efforts and his later more serious romantic comedies – and with hindsight, signalling a shift in his comedic sensibilities as a film maker (Klaus Ming October 2012).
