US 102m, B&W
Director: Howard Hawks; Cast: Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, Charles Ruggles, Walter Catlett, May Robson, Fritz Feld
In attempting to complete his Brontosaurus, secure one million dollars for his institution, and get married to his assistant all in the same day, it is little wonder that Dr. David Huxley (Grant) was easily distracted by the fast talking obsessive young woman (Hepburn) with a rich aunt and a leopard named “Baby”. This is a hilarious movie with a ridiculous plot and characters who are as about as outlandish as they could possibly be, which is precisely what makes Bringing Up Baby the quintessential American “screwball comedy” (Klaus Ming November 2012).

I wonder if this is where the whole Manic Pixie Dream Girl thing started, where a wild girl/woman pops into a man’s life for no apparent reason in order to shake up his life and get him cheered up/loosened up/etc.
If so, then once again Hawks did it first and best.
I’m not sure – this is an early one!
I am going to be showing some vintage Hollywood movies at our library starting in January. Bringing Up Baby is first on my list to show.
It’s a pretty fun movie – especially Hepburn’s crazy character.
This is one I really liked. It is totally wacky! But then Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn are both very high on my personal hall of fame.
The sheer unlikelyness of the storyline is part of its charm, though I can understand that this is also why some people dislike the movie.
