J. Edgar (2011)

US 137m, Colour
Director: Clint Eastwood; Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Josh Lucas, Judi Dench, Ed Westwick

J-EdgarJ. Edgar is a dark biographical film about the infamous J. Edgar Hoover – the deeply secretive director of the FBI from 1935 to 1972 whose often unscrupulous methods of information collection have come to light since his death. Considered one of America’s most powerful men throughout his tenure, the film portrays Hoover’s personal life against the backdrop of his crusades against gangland crime and communism. DiCaprio’s performance is beautifully nuanced – capturing Hoover’s indomitable character along with his anxiety and insecurity through his inability to come to terms with his sexuality and his mother’s overbearing control over his affairs (Klaus Ming December 2012).
