Self-described in the film’s own title sequence as “not a sequel – there has never been anything like it”, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is an outlandish parody of Mark Robson’s much maligned but very successful 1967 film Valley of the Dolls. Co-written by Roger Ebert and Russ Meyer, “Beyond” is about three young women whose rock band – The Carrie Nations, gains notoriety as a result of an impromptu performance at a wild party in Los Angeles. Along with their fame and a series of increasingly ridiculous misfortunes, the girls end up at the mercy of a tripped-put psychopath. Undoubtedly inspiration for fellow camp-film maker John Waters, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls has become a musical cult classic (Klaus Ming April 2013).
