Dodsworth is the bittersweet story of a rich middle-aged industrialist and his younger wife who has convinced her husband to live a little by selling his automobile factory and taking her abroad. Their differing experiences provide the basis for their eventual estrangement, as well as a comparison of American and European cultures, lifestyles and attitudes. Somewhat of a soap opera, this is a drama that also explores marital expectations and social expectations, albeit those of a privileged class whose problems would seem trivial by the average film goers of the day (Klaus Ming April 2013).
