Four Lions (2010)

UK 97m, Colour
Director: Chris Morris; Cast: Riz Ahmed, Kayvan Novak, Nigel Lindsay, Arsher Ali, Adeel Akhtar, Benedict Cumberbatch, Julia Davis, Craig Parkinson, Preeya Kalidas, William El-Gardi

four_lionsBased on the same formula as many crime capers where the heist goes terribly wrong, Four Lions is a black comedy about a group of incompetent homegrown terrorists who live in a British suburb who dream of nothing else than fast-track themselves to heaven. Though they are ultimately successful in blowing themselves up, their individual acts of terrorism lack any other sense of purpose. With a plot that resembles the recent bombing at the Boston Marathon, Four Lions is an unfortunate example of sociopolitical satire that has inspired real life events (Klaus Ming May 2013).

What works for me here is that it goes so far over the line. If it had tried to reign things in, it wouldn’t have been successful. By breaking all of the conventions of good taste, it works completely.

I agree, it’s such an outrageous movie – though I still had a difficult time reconciling my like for it – considering the Boston bombing.
