apocalyptoApocalypto is an astonishing adventure set during the post-classic Mayan period in Mesoamerica which tells of the destruction of a village by a raiding party that takes captive the survivors and marches them to their capital where they are to be sold as slaves or sacrificed. Though the film is presented in a Mayan dialogue with subtitles, much of the story is expressively presented in images and actions without dialogue. The film’s gorgeous cinematography, art direction and beautifully natural performances provide the most stunning depiction of one of the New World’s most complex and sophisticated ancient civilizations (Klaus Ming June 2013).
