Breaking the Waves (1996)

Denmark 158m, Colour
Director: Lars von Trier; Cast: Emily Watson, Stellan Skarsgård, Katrin Cartlidge, Jean-Marc Barr, Udo Kier

breaking-the-wavesBreaking the Waves is the tragic romantic story of Bess, a mentally unstable and naive young woman with strong fundamentalist religious world views whose deep love for her worldly husband Jan shakes the foundation of her beliefs. After a near fatal accident that leaves Jan permanently incapacitated, Bess blames herself and turns to God for answers. Presented in chapters with a realistic grainy documentary look and feel with fluid handheld photography, Breaking the Waves is an astonishingly sad and powerful story of love, devotion and misguided faith (Klaus Ming June 2013).

Watson was amazing here. It’s such a surprise that this was her first role. Nice review Klaus.

She was indeed! A very sympathetic performance as a very frustrating character.
