‘A’ Gai Wak (1983)

Hong Kong 106m, Colour
Director: Jackie Chan; Cast: Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao, Dick Wei, Lee Hoi San, Cheung Wing Fat

Project AAs a sailor turned police officer, Dragon Ma, played by Chan, fights pirates and battles corrupt government officials in this slapstick inspired martial arts action comedy that combines inventive and spectacularly dangerous stunts with impressive cinematography. Though short on plot, as with most martial arts films, Project A is arguably the best in Chan’s impressive body of work. Of note, is the clock tower scene, an homage to Safety Last (1923), and one of Chan’s most memorable stunts in the film. Putting himself at great personal risk, Chan emerges from Project A as the pre-eminent 1980s martial arts film star (Klaus Ming October 2013).
