Tim’s Vermeer (2013)

US 80m, Colour
Director: Teller; Cast: Tim Jenison, Penn Jillette, Martin Mull, Philip Steadman, David Hockney

Tims_VermeerA fascinating documentary film about Tim Jenison’s attempt to test the theory that Dutch master painter Johannes Vermeer used optical instrumentation as a technique in the production of his incredibly life-like paintings. Initially motivated by British artist David Hockney’s 2001 book Secret Knowledge: Rediscovering the Lost Techniques of the Old Masters, Jenison sets out to recreate Vermeer’s “The Music Lesson”. Like a magic trick explained, Jenison provides a plausible explanation, but also produces a remarkable painting (Klaus Ming June 2014).
