Airplane! (1980)

US 87m, Colour
Directors: David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, Jerry Zucker; Cast: Robert Hays, Julie Hagerty, Leslie Nielsen, Peter Graves, Lloyd Bridges, Robert Stack, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Lorna Patterson

AirplaneAirplane is a comedic re-make of the 1956 drama Zero Hour! in which an ex-fighter with a pathological fear of flying finds himself at the controls of a passenger airliner after the entire crew of the cockpit falls ill from food poisoning. Airplane, like the Naked Gun films that would follow, is effective on a number of levels, not the least of which are the very funny straight-man performances provided by a number of long-established Hollywood performers who were best known for their dramatic work (Klaus Ming July 2014).
