Europa ’51 (1952)

Italy 113m, B&W
Director: Roberto Rossellini; Cast: Ingrid Bergman, Alexander Knox, Ettore Giannini,
Giulietta Masina, Marcella Rovena, Tina Perna, Sandro Franchina

Europe_51Beginning as a tragic family melodrama with the death of a son after his ill-fated attempt to injure himself to gain his mother’s attention, Europa ‘51 turns into a post-war political statement when the boy’s mother becomes the subject of her husband’s discontent upon her efforts to help the underprivileged. Moved by her guilt, Bergman’s transformation from bourgeois housewife to compassionate caregiver explores concepts of post-war charity, Christianity and Communism (Klaus Ming July 2014).
