Lyman Howe’s Ride on a Runaway Train (1921)

US 6m, B&W, Sound Effects
Director: Unknown

runawaytrainFound in the New Zealand Film Archive in 2010, Ride on a Runaway Train was reunited with its soundtrack which fortuitously had been preserved in the United States Library of Congress. This short novelty film with disorienting tilting camera angles offers first person views from a “train ride” that still provides the viewer with a feeling of movement and motion. It undoubtedly thrilled early movie-goers who likely paid for repeated viewings on this amusement ride-like experience (Klaus Ming July 2014).
