The Mysterious Lady (1928)

US 96m, B&W, silent
Director: Fred Niblo; Cast: Greta Garbo, Conrad Nagel, Gustav von Seyffertitz

mysterious_ladyThe Mysterious Lady is a rather dull spy-based melodrama based on Ludwig Wolff’s novel War in the Dark. Despite the paper-thin plot, the film is notable for its cinematography and Garbo’s performance. At 22 years of age, Greta Garbo was mesmerizing beyond her years as a Russian femme fatale. Outshining every other actor on the screen, this early performance was a sign of the sensational career that would follow (Klaus Ming August 2014).
