Lone Star (1996)

US 135m, Colour
Director: John Sayles; Cast: Chris Cooper, Kris Kristofferson, Matthew McConaughey, Elizabeth Peña

Lone StarA slowly paced modern era western, Lone star is a sophisticated murder mystery about a small town Texas sheriff who investigates a murder that has personal connections. An engaging film that explores ethnicity, politics and history amid a complicated twenty-five year old murder investigation that demands close attention, this is also a drama about son who must come to terms with his father’s past and the continuing impact that it has on his life (Klaus Ming December 2014).

One of my favorite movies of the 1990s, back when I saw a lot more movies and wrote some reviews.

Chris Cooper had his (excellent) performance somewhat overlooked at the time, unfortunately, since the movie came out in the middle of a big publicity push for Matthew McConaughey’s career, so he got too much attention (for a pretty small part) and Cooper got slighted (and he’s the star of the picture).

Kristofferson is excellent also. In a movie of well-rounded characters, he’s wonderful as a one-dimensional rat bastard who’s obviously having a great time being bad.

Frances McDormand said at the time that Bunny was one of the best roles she’d ever had, though she only has one (wonderful and absolutely essential) scene in the movie.

Oh, and also a first rate performance by Elizabeth Pena, who passed away very recently.
