The Quatermass Xperiment (1955)

UK 82m, B&W
Director: Val Guest; Cast: Brian Donlevy, Jack Warner, Richard Wordsworth, Margia Dean

the-quatermass-xperimentA film adaptation of the 1953 BBC television serial The Quatermass Experiment, this is a science fiction horror film about two missing astronauts, and a third whose continuing mutation poses a threat to humanity. Despite the dubious scientific explanations and the low-budget special effects, the horrific modus operandi of the alien “invader” is notable as it is the same employed in the 1938 John W. Campbell novella, Who Goes There?, which was popularized in film as The Thing in 1951 and in 1982. The first of three films, this production was followed by Quatermass 2 (1957) and Quatermass and the Pit (1967), and laid the foundation the series of Hammer Horror films (Klaus Ming December 2014).
