Secrets & Lies (1996)

UK 142m, Colour
Director: Mike Leigh; Cast: Timothy Spall, Brenda Blethyn, Phyllis Logan, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Claire Rushbrook

secretsandliesA wonderful dark comedic drama, Secrets and Lies is the story of Hortense Cumberbatch, an adopted black middle class woman who discovers that she is part of a dysfunctional white working class family. Though a relatively simple plot, the rich characters and poignant dialogue are only surpassed by Brenda Blethyn’s extraordinary performance as the guilt ridden working class mum whose life is turned upside down when her long-lost daughter enters her life (Klaus Ming January 2015).
