Le Trou (1959)

France 132m, B&W
Director: Jacques Becker; Cast: Michel Constantin, Jean Keraudy, Philippe Leroy, Raymond Meunier, Marc Michel

le-trouLe Trou is a tense drama about five inmates who attempt a prison break by digging a tunnel from their cell. Adapted from the 1957 novel of the same name, and based on an actual event, The Hole is a meticulous retelling of inmates laborious efforts. The realistic look and tension that is created is in large part as result of the lengthy shots of the men furiously working to hammer and saw their way through concrete floors and steel bars. In so closely observing their efforts, we share in their excitement, danger and despair (Klaus Ming January 2015).
